ADA-Compliant Sink Guide (Kitchens and Bathrooms)
May 14, 2021

Making sure your kitchen and bathroom sinks are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is crucial for your business when building homes where accessibility is a factor.

In this article, you’ll learn the ADA compliance specifications for kitchen and bathroom sinks. And, we’ll tell you how to get one that will last a lifetime.

What Does the ADA Say about Sinks?

What Does the ADA Say about Sinks?

The ADA guidelines on sink specifications are pretty clear. The following applies to both kitchen and bathroom sinks:

  • Your sink must be mounted no higher than 34-inches off the floor
  • There must be 27 x 30 inches of knee clearance below the sink
  • There must be 11-25 inches of knee depth below the sink
  • The floor space below the sink must be clear and unobstructed
  • The pipes under the sink must be insulated

Why Are ADA Guidelines Important?

Why Are ADA Guidelines Important?

You may be wondering how these guidelines help people with limited mobility use a sink.

The guidelines ensure that the sink space is wheelchair-accessible. The height and clearance specs provide enough space for a wheelchair to maneuver under a sink and for a user to reach the basin and faucet.

The insulated pipes keep the user from getting burned or wet during use.

The guidelines are also important for your business. The ADA requires that all businesses, even small ones, maintain compliant facilities. Businesses found to be non-compliant can face fines for not accommodating all guests.

Don’t Forget The Faucets

Don’t Forget The Faucets

Don’t forget to follow the ADA compliance rules for faucets too. If you don’t, your entire bathroom or kitchen will be non-compliant.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Faucets must be operable by touch, electronic sensor, lever, or push button
  • You must be able to use the faucet with one hand
  • The faucet should turn on easily (by exerting a force of 5 lbs or less)
  • The faucet must not be mounted more than 48 inches above the floor if the sink space has a depth of 20 inches or less
  • The faucet must not be mounted more than 44 inches above the floor if the sink space has a depth of 20-25 inches
