This is the year to learn to bring joy into the more hectic parts of our lives. Perhaps you want to have guests over more often, or just make more meals for yourself at home. If you want to create a cozier environment in your kitchen and more easily enjoy the time you spend there, here are some quick and easy adjustments to help soothe your frazzled soul.

Lighting
A cozy kitchen is well lit with natural light during the day and has good work lighting for the evening but otherwise soft light overhead. Consider replacing old curtains with some new shutter blinds that will let light in while still keeping the option of privacy at night. Under-cabinet lights are inexpensive and easy to install. They make meal preparation and cooking easy and safe, without having to turn on harsh overhead lighting.

Smells
Cooking often brings some pretty strong smells into the house. Use either a large scented candle or an essential oil warmer to help mask any lingering odors. Avoid complicated scent combinations that try to imitate things like baked goods. Choosing a simple and more natural scent, like orange, rosemary, or eucalyptus will help to keep the atmosphere pleasant and not overwhelming.

Surfaces
Keeping unnecessary or unsightly things on your countertop can cause subconscious anxiety. To help keep your kitchen atmosphere peaceful, reduce any clutter, dust thoroughly, and only set out one or two things that are both useful and beautiful, such as your teapot or a fresh and fragrant flower arrangement.
Seating
People want to be where the food is, and often when you have guests over, the kitchen is where people tend to congregate. Making sure that your chairs are comfortable will make a big difference in the way that you, and any guests, feel about your home. Add some cushions to a bench seat, get your chairs reupholstered, or if space is limited, add a comfortable stool that can be slid out of the way.

Now that your kitchen is a cozier space, bring out the hot tea, the fuzzy socks, and turn the radio on, because you’re ready to relax.
