What made you choose to renovate a home instead of buying a new one? How did you know the fixer upper was the right one to transform?

When we started house hunting, everything was either cookie-cutter, plain-jane or expensive enough that you couldn’t afford any renovations; so we got creative. We started looking into a fixer upper. After a long search, we found our house and it was an actual dump. It was one carpet stain short of looking like a swamp monster lived in there. The house was dark and dirty, but somehow I fell in love with the original cedar beams, the sky lights, the one acre wooded lot, and the “country” neighborhood that is super close to the city. Negotiations were rough, but eventually we got it for a steal; so we were able to put all the much needed work into it.

The kitchen was the most major renovation in the whole house. When I saw the house listing photos, I knew the only way I was going to buy it was if I could knock a wall down in the kitchen to make an open floor plan. How cliche of me, right? But the house needed a “WOW” factor and I was going to give it one.

STEP ONE:

I had to confirm I could actually tear a wall down. The wall we eventually ended up tearing out actually used to be an exterior wall, so it was load bearing and needed a huge ugly beam to be added (yuck). Luckily, our house already had beautiful cedar beams running throughout the ceilings, so I just wrapped my beam in cedar and it fit in perfectly.

STEP TWO:

It was time to choose the several different details that would transform the space. I wanted a slight farmhouse look with a modern touch. There were so many things to decide on: cabinet colors and details, hardware finishes, countertop styles, the kitchen sink material and color. AHH! Scary stuff! I decided to take it one thing at a time as the project progressed.

STEP THREE:

I searched through inspirational content and organized my thoughts. I settled on: a modern farmhouse design with some open raw wood shelving, white fireclay apron sink, countertops and cabinets with matte black cabinet pulls to soften the white. I also incorporated an antique bronze faucet, dark pendant lighting and wooden accents to bring warmth into the room.

I knew from day one that a farmhouse sink would be in my kitchen. It’s so clean, modern, and the rounded edges give it some coziness. And, the faucet is an obvious stunner, placed right in the middle of a huge island, drawing your eyes to the sink.

Honestly, I wasn’t really set on a faucet. It was one of those details that I hadn’t thought about. The MR Direct team helped me choose the perfect one to fit my design aesthetic.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a complete kitchen renovation?

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a complete kitchen renovation?

I highly recommend doing thorough research on your contractor and make sure you pick a good one. Most importantly, don’t let the project overwhelm you. Things will change, so keep your mind open and have fun with it. Don’t think of all the crazy decisions that have to be made, just start looking for inspiration and go from there. Take it one decision at a time.
